Your reputation as an artist matters. Many artists like to think that the work will speak for itself – and to a certain extent, with a certain audience, perhaps it will. Let’s face it – most art buyers don’t have a clue what they’re looking for.
If you wanted to be cynical, you might even say that many art buyers are buying just on the hope that you might become famous and their art becomes really valuable.
Why not help those poor art collectors along and give them what they’re looking for – a little credibility.
Art Contest Awards
Have you ever entered an art contest? (Really? Who has NEVER entered an art contest? Seriously.) Put some of your awards on your site. The right hand column, towards the middle or bottom is just fine. If the contest had a graphic logo, put that logo up with a link to the contest website.
Press Coverage for Artists
Press coverage is amazing. People who thought your art was crap before will suddenly flock to buy your art if they find out you’ve been in the paper or on television. The media lends an air of legitimacy to your work. Add some links to the interviews you’ve done, or articles that have been written. If you have a lot of media coverage, you should put together a Media Kit that highlights the best pieces.
Don’t have press coverage yet? Live in a small town, or are you from a small town? Call up that local paper (you know, the one that comes out randomly a couple of times per month) and ask them if they’d like to interview a local artist who’s on their way to the top. Spin a good story for them and you’ll get an interview. Then you’re a rock star.
Web Discussion of Your Art
Do people discuss your work on Facebook? Are you big time in the Imagekind forums? Link there and show people what others are saying about you.
What have you done to lend some legitimacy to your art?
