Attitude in How You Sell Art

Amanda Palmer from The Dresden Dolls

Amanda Palmer not only rejected the starving artist myth, but she beat it up, took its lunch money and kissed its boyfriend. From her blog:

“artists will now be coming straight to you (yes YOU, you who want their music, their films, their books) for their paychecks.
please welcome them. please help them. please do not make them feel badly about asking you directly for money.
dead serious: this is the way s*** is going to work from now on and it will work best if we all embrace it and don’t fight it.”

Agents, publishers, galleries, and managers – you’ve been served.

Amanda Palmer is, in her own words, “creating the protocol” for other artists who want to keep more of the wealth they generate for themselves. She’s repeatedly used Twitter & Ustream to sell to her clients. She’s even auctioned her art at her concerts.

So, here’s my question: If Amanda Palmer is creating the protocol, and she claims that other artists are going to cautiously follow, what are you going to do? How are you going to take your work directly to your fans?

Let the free flow of ideas ensue.

The short response: I loved AFP’s post!

The long response is the one I started writing here and ended up being so lengthy that I decided to put it up on my own site – http://polymathdesignlab.com/blog/On-Artists-and-Money.html
