Several years ago I was trying to figure out how to use the power of the Internet to market the plays that I was producing, directing, or performing in. I wanted more people to see my work. I started out messing around with Myspace (remember them?), sending out email blasts (does anyone still call it that?), and generally being obnoxious to get attention. I had some limited success, but not too much.
After diving into all of this online stuff, I ended up developing a very successful blog. I learned about how search engines work, how social media marketing is really done, and I learned how to really sell stuff online. For a while, I even worked full-time for an internet marketing company.
But, as it always does, the Art world kept calling to me. I needed to be more creative – I wasn’t happy just helping big companies sell more products. I wanted to help artists get their work online. I noticed that there weren’t many places online where artists could go to specifically learn about selling art online – and that there weren’t too many artists who were doing a very good job of selling that work online either.
I started TheAbundantArtist.com as a way of sharing my knowledge with artists. I wrote blog posts about how to use find the right people online, how to use search engine marketing techniques, effective email marketing, and other powerful marketing tools to sell art online. I started getting some attention and decided to do some group coaching courses. As I was doing the group coaching I was really enjoying myself, and several of the artists who were part of the Internet Marketing for Artists courses saw immediate improvement in their sales. They were ecstatic! The problem has always been that most artists couldn’t afford the courses that I offered, so I wasn’t able to reach the artists who really needed the help.
