Marketing for Theatre Companies: 24 Usable Hours

by theabundantartist

I wanted to let all of my theater marketing compatriots know about Devon Smith’s wonderful blog, 24 Usable Hours. Devon is a graduate student at Yale, studying theater marketing. Specifically, she is studying how theatre companies are using social media. Her blog links to tons and tons of useful data on how various companies are using Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and other social media sites. The data is academic in nature and fairly reliable. It’s up to the marketer to figure out how to use the data, but I would highly recommend subscribing to Devon’s blog.

I have used the theatre marketing data from Devon Smith’s blog to help theatre companies understand how to use social media to build their email list, spread the word about their shows, build audience engagement, and attract non-theatre goers to shows. Her work has been discussed at events like 10,000 Invites, the Portland Area Theatre Alliance’s Life After Print event, and several other theatre marketing events.

I predict that when Devon Smith graduates she’ll have her pick of opportunities at major theatre companies across the nation. Someone would be smart to snap her up early!
