Flash is rarely done well. I’ve only seen maybe one or two sites in my entire life and I’m a living fossil, that have used flash where it actually enhanced the experience. Most folks don’t want to wait. I know I don’t when I’m researching an artist or artist submission. Don’t make me wait. Which reminds me, for gawd’s sake, don’t, don’t, don’t have one of those drawbridge Enter pages either. The more clicks I have to make to get to where I’m going, the less likely, I’m going to get there.

Great article. I’m revising my site and wanted to put large images into a simple gallery format on my front page, now I’m disuaded from using a Flash template. There are many html templates for doing this but Cory can you recommend one that’s suitable for artists?

You’ve made some great points, especially about the lack of Flash support in the iPhone/iPad. Depending on what type of art you’re selling and who is your market, turning away these clients can be a very bad deal. The iPhone/iPad users are probably youngish, techie, and reasonably well-off. Is that a market you want to prevent from seeing your art?

I’d add one more item to your arguments list: Pure JavaScript image gallery solutions are free, easy to use, and degrade nicely for those folks with JavaScript disabled.

I use one called ThickBox (based on the jQuery library) on my blog whenever I post photos. If a user doesn’t have JavaScript enabled, clicking on photos opens them in a new window. If they have it enabled, it opens in a “image viewer” box within the current page.

If you’re using a Flash image gallery and someone has Flash disabled, your users see nothing.
